9 Ways to Create an Eco-Friendly Daily Routine

Blog article image

Creating a more eco-friendly daily routine can feel daunting at first. Where is the best place to start? What does it mean to be eco-friendly? When addressing climate change, it’s common to spread yourself too thin. Instead, we recommend starting with 2-3 small daily changes that fit seamlessly into your lifestyle. Need a place to start? Keep reading to learn the benefits of going green, along with tips for creating an eco-friendly daily routine.

Benefits of Going Green

It’s no secret that going green is good for the planet. But have you ever wondered how you can directly impact the environment in a positive way? Below are two of the largest benefits of going green.

Benefit Your Health

As the world’s population grows at an exponential rate, so does air pollution. Air pollution refers to the unhealthy and harmful air pollutants that are emitted into our environments through extensive production and energy use.

These pollutants can often be hazardous, and even fatal. Wondering how to make a small impact? You can start reducing your contribution to the world’s air pollutants by using public transportation, walking, and using your car less.

Benefit the Environment

Preventing air, water, and noise pollution can simultaneously affect your health and the environment. Creating an eco-friendly routine has countless environmental benefits. It can help preserve the world’s rainforests, which are crucial for absorbing carbon emissions and stabilizing the climate. They are also home to over 30 million species of animals and plants, and store over half of the Earth’s rainwater.

Similar to the health benefits of going green, reducing your carbon footprint is also one great way to play a part in reducing air pollution - which is one of the leading causes of global warming.

1. Reusable Tumblers

Plastic cups and products can contain harmful toxic chemicals that aren’t beneficial to your body or the planet. Plus, while reusable products may take more resources to produce, they can be used several more times which creates a longer-term environmental impact.

2. Eliminate Plastic Grocery Bags

Use reusable bags instead for shopping and groceries! If you have a copious amount of plastic bags stowed away in the corners of your apartment or house, consider reusing them on your next grocery trip. Or, check out these fun crafts to try with plastic bags. Some of the best crafts are made from something recycled!

3. Skip the Straws

Save the turtles, skip the straws! Straws are polluting our oceans and can endanger all of the important wildlife that lives there. You can try using reusable straws instead, or try making your own with pasta straws. Who knew, right?

4. Monitor Your Water Use

When natural water reservoirs are lower, this can impact our health and the environment. Using less water in your daily routine is one way to combat our natural water resources from drying up. Consider turning off the shower when you suds your hair, or switching off the sink when it comes time to brush your teeth.

5. Thrift and Donate Clothes

Big number coming at you: humans discard 92 million tons of clothing waste per year. That may seem like an inconceivable number, but we should be paying attention to it! Much of this clothing waste is made of microplastics, which end up in our landfills and waterways. In past years, the clothing industry has been responsible for over 4% of carbon emissions

To eliminate your clothing waste, hop on the thrift trend! Visit that cool vintage clothing shop you pass on your route home, and donate any clothes you don’t use anymore to places like Goodwill.

6. Try a Plant-Based Diet

Meat production is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, soil degradation, and deforestation. Going plant-based is one way to personally contribute to decreasing this impact.

For some, going plant-based means going vegan or vegetarian. For others, it means simply introducing plant-forward eating patterns into your routine. If you’re interested, the bottom line is to find something that works best for you and your body. If you simply love cheeseburgers, you’re not alone! Everything in moderation is key here.

7. Use Bamboo or Recycled Toilet Paper

One roll of toilet paper consumes 37 gallons of water, and 1.5 pounds of wood. You read that right, for one roll! Additionally, around 27,000 trees are cut down each day to make toilet paper. Think about next time you’re sitting on the toilet!

Toilet paper production is one of the largest contributors to global deforestation. We can work to use less paper by purchasing products made from sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled paper. Wipe your bum, and give back to the Earth, it’s that easy!

8. Buy Used Furniture & Home Goods

Buying used is one way to reduce your ecological footprint. Plus, this method is much more budget-friendly! One study found that Americans throw out more than 12 million tons of furniture, which mostly ends up in the landfill. Treat your current furniture like you would your old clothes. Instead of throwing it out, donate it or sell it to someone else who will appreciate it like it’s new!

9. Learn Composting

Composting is another way of recycling organic materials. When done correctly, this can significantly reduce your annual household waste. If you have a lawn or garden, this is a great way to create nutrient-rich soil straight from your waste.
